The World Languages Courses - Spring 2024-2025
WLs GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT 2024-2025 ACADEMIC YEAR
Dear Students,
The World Languages Courses (WLCs), offered by the School of Languages in Spring 2024-2025 are:
German and Turkish as a foreign language: Undergraduate, graduate and freshman students can take these courses.
German courses are offered 5 hours a week (3+2); the registration for the courses is mandatory; the courses are free.
Turkish as a foreign language is 3 hours a week (2 + 1).
These courses are free elective subjects. Each course corresponds to 3 Sabanci credits and 4 ECTS credits. If you take more than 2 beginners courses (110 and 120), the third beginner course will not be counted as a credit course.
The number of ECTS credits varies for Turkish courses; please consult the course catalogue for information.
World Language courses do not count as credit courses for FENS students but they affect their GPA.
Ottoman, Persian: Only Postgraduate students can take these courses.
Each course corresponds to 3 Sabanci credits and 10 ECTS credits.
NOTE: IF YOU HAVE A TIME CONFLICT WITH THE DISCUSSION HOURS OF THE COURSE, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO APPLY FOR PERMISSION FROM YOUR TEACHER TO TAKE THE COURSE. PLEASE CONTACT THE RELEVANT TEACHER FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
The World Languages registration date for undergraduate and graduate students is 31 January 2025
Registration dates for Freshman students: 13-14 February 2025
1. WLCs registrations will start on 31 January 2025. GER 110 courses with less than 10 students registered will be closed on the February 7th and will not be opened during the Add-Drop period unless there are at least 10 students petitions.
For GER 120 and higher levels a only a minimum of 5 students need to be registered for courses to open.
It is very important you register during the registration period. If you cannot register during the registration period for any specific reason (you are not sure about your level, for example) you need to sign a petition expressing your intention to register during the Add-drop period. Take a photo of the petition with your signature and send it by email to the teacher of the course you wish to register for. You can find the petition form at the end of this announcement. (Please check teachers’ contact information in the table below)
2. If you have studied any of the World Languages in another institution and you are not sure about your level, please contact the relevant course instructor directly so you can get a day and time to do a placement test. (Please check teachers’ contact information in the table below)
3. If you have taken the placement test after the registrations have finished, you need to sign a petition confirming that you will take the course during the add and drop period. Take a photo of the petition with your signature and send it by email to the teacher of the course you wish to register for. (Please check teachers’ contact information in the table below). Please note that if you do not score highly enough to take a higher level course, you will have to register for another class during the add-drop.
4. The students who start from the Basic Level do not need to take the Placement Test and can make their registrations directly. Likewise, students who have already passed the WL course and are willing to continue can register directly to the next level. It’s very important that you make your registration during the registration week.
5. Both 3-hours classes and 2-hours discussion classes will start on the 5th of February.
FRESHMAN STUDENTS WANTING TO TAKE LANGUAGE COURSES
The registration period for Freshman is during the add and drop period. Before you register you need to sign a petition and send it via email to your teacher.
POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS WANTING TO TAKE LANGUAGE COURSES
As WLs courses are undergraduate courses, you need to ask for permission from your institute to register for an undergraduate course. Your institute will give you a form that the language course teacher needs to sign.
TURKISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE FOR MASTER STUDENTS AND TEACHERS
Master students can register to TUR directly from the system using 500 coded courses.

ERASMUS/ EXCHANGE STUDENTS AND WL REGISTRATIONS
If you want to register for any of the world languages during the add and drop period you need to sign a petition. Take a photo of the petition with your signature and send it by email to the teacher of the course you wish to register for. Please check teachers’ contact information in the table below.
PERSIAN/OTTOMAN MASTER STUDENTS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How many credits are World Languages courses?
German corresponds to 3 Sabanci credits and 4 ECTS credits.
Ottoman and Persian correspond to 3 Sabanci credits and 10 ECTS. Only postgraduate students can take these courses.
Do I need to pay for these courses?
No, you do not need to pay.
Can I attend lessons if I am not registered for the course?
In order to attend lessons, you need to be registered for the course.
I am a Freshman student, can I use my credits to take a language course?
Yes, freshman students can take a language course as a free elective course. The registration period for Freshman is during the add and drop period. Before you register you need to sign a petition.
I am a foreign teacher who would like to study Turkish. Can I attend the Turkish language lessons?
Yes, you can attend. Please contact the Turkish teacher. Please check the teachers’ contact information in the table below.
I have studied the language before in another institution. Can I register directly to the course?
You cannot register directly to the course. If you have studied in another institution before (high school, language academy, Erasmus program, etc.), you need to take a level test to find out for which course you can register. Contact the teacher for the date of the level test. After you have taken the level test, you need to apply for pre-requisite waiving approval through the information system.
I have done my level test but the information system does not allow me to register.

I have studied the language at Sabanci. Can I register directly for the course or do I need to ask for permission from the teacher?
You can register directly through the information system if you intend to continue the next level following the course you took. You do not need any permission to register.
I have a time conflict with one of the sections. Can I register into the discussion hours of section A and the lecture hours of section B?
The system does not allow you to register to two different sections. You need to organize your timetable so that you can register for the discussion hour and the lecture hour of the same section. You cannot combine hours from different sections.
I missed the registration period. What do I need to do if I want to register during the add and drop period?
You need to sign a petition expressing your intention to register during the Add-drop. Take a photo of the petition with your signature and send it by email to the teacher of the course you wish to take. Please see the emails table at the end of the announcement.

I have a time conflict and cannot register for the course I want. What can I do?
You should ask for time conflict permission from your teacher through the information system. If the system does not allow you, sign a petition saying that you would like to take the course but that you have a time conflict. Take a photo of the petition with your signature and send it by email to the teacher of the course you wish to take. Please see teachers’ email details below.
