The theme of the event was English being used more as a lingua franca around the world now more than as a foreign or second language. The basic definition of English as a lingua franca suggests that English is used as a means of communication between people coming from two or more different linguistic backgrounds. This view encourages teachers and students to appreciate the fact that English is mostly used by non-native speakers around the world and this fact has brought about the term “World Englishes” to appear, a term that Microsoft Word does not recognize and mark in red as I write this entry.

15th International Bilkent University School English Language Conference

The theme of this year’s conference was “The Future of EAP: Provision, Standards and Practices” with sub-categories including Academic Practice, EAP Students, Program Design and Implementation.

Meeting of Change Agents (MOCA) held at TED University Ankara focused on Engaging the Language Learner within and beyond the classroom. Main areas of discussion included motivational factors, factors in distractions, how to choose and plan engaging and effective activities, student- teacher and student-student interaction, and assessment issues. This 2nd gathering of MOCA had 33 institutions participating represented by both teachers and students, which makes the gathering a special case.

The abstract for Elizabeth Coleman’s presentation, “On Intersectionality and Academic Drag,” stood out from the SL Pathways that Inspire Us conference program. It was not your everyday conference presentation title in ELT, and a topic, rarely, if ever, explored in EFL teaching contexts in Turkey. I had the opportunity to both attend the presentation and later interview Ms. Coleman as part of our SL conference May 4-5, 2018. I offer a review here of her presentation for those who were not in attendance, recognizing a need and an urgency to be part of creating opportunities for the discussions started in Ms. Coleman’s presentation to continue.

(Un)Ethical Futures: Utopia, Dystopia and Science Fiction Conference took place at Monash University Law Chambers in Melbourne between December 15-17, 2017. Over the three days, there were many intellectually stimulating workshops and presentations given by academics, graduate students and artists.
