ELAE (ONLINE)
Dear Students,
Sabancı University English Language Assessment Exam (ELAE) will be held online and consists of two stages:
ELAE Stage 1: A multiple choice exam
ELAE Stage 2: Writing and speaking exams

Who takes the English Language Assessment Exam?
All newly admitted students are required to take the ELAE at the beginning of the academic year for which they are registering. Students who pass the exam are enrolled directly into Freshman Year courses. Depending on their score, the rest are placed in the appropriate Route of the SL FDY English program.
When is the ELAE?
The ELAE is administered several times a year; in January, at the end of the academic year (June/July), prior to the beginning of the academic year (August/September). For the ELAE exam dates, please see the relevant academic calendar.
How do I register for the Exam?
As soon as students are placed at the University, they are automatically registered for the August/September English Language Assessment Exam. Information detailing examination arrangements will be shared on the website a week before the exam.
Where will the ELAE take place?
The ELAE will be online. Details about the exam will be given a week before the exam takes place. Students need a computer that can connect to the Internet, and have working camera, microphone, and speakers to be able to take the exam.
How many sections are there in the ELAE Stage I exam? How many questions are there?
There are two main sections in the ELAE Stage I exam: grammar and vocabulary. There are 120 questions in total. The questions are in multiple choice and gap fill format. Students have 60 minutes to complete the exam. Sample questions can be found at the links below. Only students who are successful in Stage I can take Stage II writing and speaking exams.

How many sections are there in the Stage II exam? What do I need to get in order to pass the exam?
Students who pass Stage 1 take Stage 2 Writing and Speaking Exams.
Writing Exam
Those students who are successful in Stage I first take Stage II Writing Exam. They are required to write a well-organized academic essay of around 300-350 words that demonstrates their linguistic abilities.
Speaking Exam
Two to three days after the writing exam, students take the ELAE Speaking Exam. The speaking exam is administered one-to-one. There are two assessed tasks in the exam.

Students who receive a minimum grade of 70% overall with a minimum grade of 47,5% from each section (writing and speaking) become Freshman students.
Please note: as in all SU university courses, all work in the ELAE is expected to be the student’s own. Plagiarism is a grave offence that will be penalised. Plagiarism includes presenting another person’s idea(s) or a part of their work as if it is one’s own, submitting another student’s work, cutting and pasting chunks of words or sentences from the Internet, as well as buying papers from the Internet or from another person. Any plagiarized work will be reviewed by the SL board and may result in a grade penalty or a “0” for the ELAE.
What happens if I fail the ELAE?
Students who fail the ELAE are placed in FDY. Stage 1 scores are used to determine which level a student is placed at in FDY. However, a student’s level is confirmed based on their performance in the first week of classes. This means that a student’s level might change either up or down after the first week.

What happens if I already have an internationally recognised English language certificate?
If students can certify that they have passed one of the national and/or international foreign language examinations at a level determined by the university, they will be entitled to begin their undergraduate programs. (Read more here)
How can I prepare for the ELAE?
Study vocabulary: A good starting point would be to check the following word lists:
Study grammar: If you have any grammar books, it would be useful to review and revise sentence structures. ELAE Stage I assesses language at A1-B1 levels based on CEFRL (1) (Elementary-Intermediate), and Stage II assesses language competence at B2 level (Upper Intermediate / Advanced).
Practice speaking and writing as much as possible, following the sample tasks that are mentioned above.

İngilizce Dil Ölçme Sınavına kimler girer?
Yeni kabul edilen tüm öğrencilerin, kayıt oldukları akademik yılın başında ELAE'ye girmeleri gerekmektedir. Sınavı geçen öğrenciler doğrudan Birinci Sınıf derslerine kayıt olurlar. Puanlarına bağlı olarak, geri kalanlar SL FDY İngilizce programının uygun Rotasına yerleştirilir.
İngilizce Dil Ölçme Sınavı ne zaman yapılmaktadır?
ELAE yılda birkaç kez uygulanır; Ocak ayında, akademik yılın sonunda (Haziran / Temmuz), akademik yılın başlangıcından önce (Ağustos / Eylül). ELAE sınav tarihleri için lütfen ilgili akademik takvime bakın.

Sınav nerede yapılacaktır?
ELAE uzaktan yapılacaktır. Sınavla ilgili ayrıntılar, sınav yapılmadan bir hafta önce verilecektir. Öğrencilerin sınava girebilmeleri için internet bağlantısı sorunsuz çalışan, ve çalışır durumda kamera, mikrofon ve hoparlörü olan bir bilgisayara ihtiyaçları vardır.
Stage 1 kaç bölümden oluşmaktadır? Kaç soru vardır?

Dil becerilerini gösteren 300-350 kelimelik iyi organize edilmiş bir akademik makale yazmaları gerekmektedir.
Konuşma Sınavı
Yazma sınavından iki ila üç gün sonra öğrenciler ELAE Konuşma Sınavına girerler.Konuşma sınavı online olarak birebir yapılır. Sınav iki kısımdan oluşmaktadır.

Her iki bölümden %47,5 almış olmak koşuluyla genel ortalamada en az %70 alan öğrenciler birinci sınıf öğrencisi olurlar.
Lütfen dikkat edin; tüm SU ders ve sınavlarında olduğu gibi, ELAE’nin de tamamını sınava giren öğrenciler herhangi bir kişi ya da kaynaktan yardım almadan, tamamen kendi başlarına tamamlamalıdırlar. İntihal (bilgi/eser hırsızlığı) çok ciddi bir akademik suçtur ve cezalandırılır. İntihal başka birine ait olan fikirleri ya da cümleleri kendininmiş gibi göstermek, başka bir kişinin yapmış olduğu bir çalışmayı kendi adı ile teslim etmek, internetten sözcük grupları ya da cümle(ler) kopyalayıp kendi çalışmasında kullanmak, internetten hazır yazılmış makale satın almak ya da başkasına yazdırmak gibi eylemleri içerir. İntihal içeren her çalışma Diller Okulu Kurulu tarafından görüşülür, ve not cezaları ya da ELAE den 0 alınması ile sonuçlanabilir.
ELAE’yi geçemezsem ne olur?
ELAE’den geçmeyen öğrenciler TGY’ye yerleştirilir. ELAE 1. Aşama notları öğrencilerin TGY de hangi seviyeye yerleşeceğini belirlemek için de kullanılır. Ancak, öğrencilerin seviyeleri derslerin başladığı ilk hafta sınıf içi performansları ile de değerlendirilir. Bu değerlendirme sonucunda ilk haftanın sonunda bir öğrencinin seviyesi üst ya da alt seviye olarak değiştirilebilir.

Halihazırda uluslararası geçerliliğe sahip bir İngilizce dil sertifikam varsa ne olur?
Öğrenciler üniversite tarafından belirlenen düzeyde ulusal ve/veya uluslararası yabancı dil sertifikalarından birini geçtiklerini belgeleyebilirlerse, lisans programlarına başlama hakkına sahip olacaklardır. (Daha fazlasını buradan okuyun)
ELAE'ye nasıl hazırlanabilirim?
Kelime çalışın. İyi bir başlangıç noktası aşağıdaki kelime listelerini kontrol etmektir:
Dilbilgisi çalışması: Herhangi bir gramer kitabınız varsa cümle yapılarını gözden geçirmek faydalı olacaktır. ELAE Aşama I, CEFRL (1) temelinde A1-B1 (Başlangıç-Orta) düzeylerinde dili değerlendirir ve Aşama II, B2 düzeyinde (Üst Orta / İleri) dil yeterliliğini değerlendirir.
Yukarıda bahsedilen örnek sınavlardaki soru ve görev tiplerini baz alarak mümkün olduğunca çok konuşma ve yazma pratiği yapın.
