The aim of the Vocabulary Project, as a sub-group of the Syllabus Development Project, is to develop an appropriate vocabulary syllabus based on the contents of the Beyond the Boundaries series, a set of coursebooks produced by the School of Languages. This aim is being met by analysing the texts used in the Beyond the Boundaries series in order to generate lists of lexical items to be presented at relevant stages of the three Beyond the Boundaries levels. Relevance is based on the frequency of occurrence of each item and their relative importance to the academic learning environment. The goal of the project is to empower students to move from passive recognition of vocabulary items to active use in their writing and speaking abilities.
