English for Media Literacy Across Turkey Scholarship Program- 18-21 April 2024, Ankara

Ilkem Kayican Dipcin

I recently had the privilege of being selected as one of the 18 recipients of the prestigious English for Media Literacy Across Turkey scholarship program. This initiative, organized by the U.S. Department of State, the Turkish-American Association, and the Regional English Language Office in Turkey, provided an incredible opportunity for professional growth and learning.

Under the guidance of Vincent Lauter from Arizona State University, the program featured an intensive "train the trainer" session, where we explored cutting-edge topics at the intersection of language, media, and technology. Our discussions delved into the intricate relationship between media and society, addressing the challenges posed by misinformation and disinformation in the digital age.

Notably, we examined the potential implications of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and extended reality on media literacy and communication. Additionally, we investigated the role of social psychology in shaping online behavior, equipping us with valuable insights into navigating the complexities of the modern information landscape.

This course transcended the mere acquisition of skills; it empowered participants to think critically and engage ethically with social media and 21st-century information and communications technologies. From understanding the dynamics between media and society to tackling misinformation and disinformation, every session provided revelatory insights.

It was an enriching experience to collaborate with fellow scholarship recipients who were English instructors from public and private schools and universities across Istanbul, Ankara, Adana, Erzurum, and Izmir. For three immersive days, we created lesson plans, brainstormed interactive activities, and discussed the integration of various English teaching skills into the media literacy curriculum. I was impressed by each participant's motivation to collaborate and contribute.

Furthermore, as part of the program, I am now offering the English for Media Literacy course to applicants, including English teachers and journalists residing in Istanbul, in a face-to-face format. This course is provided free of charge, enabling participants to benefit from the same educational opportunity that I have had the opportunity to experience.
