A Workshop on Disaster and Community Interpreting in Collaboration with SUAK

by Ozan Tekin

On February 6, 2023, Turkey was devastated by a powerful earthquake, underscoring the critical need for effective communication in disaster response. Interpreters play a crucial role in such situations, bridging the gap between emergency services and affected communities. Recently, I had the privilege of leading a workshop on disaster and community interpreting, an initiative that became even more meaningful through our collaboration with the student club SUAK.

Bridging Gaps in Crisis: The Impact of the 2023 Earthquake

The recent earthquake in Turkey highlighted the urgent need for interpreters who can operate effectively under pressure. With communities in distress and emergency responders working around the clock, clear and accurate communication was essential. Interpreters were key in conveying critical information, assisting in coordination efforts, and providing support to those affected by the disaster.

Engaging Activities for Real-World Readiness

Our workshop, conducted in collaboration with SUAK, began with a theoretical exploration of disaster interpreting, framed by the context of recent events like the earthquake. This setting provided participants with a tangible understanding of the real-world impact of their skills.

Interactive activities, including surveys and "Think-Pair-Share" sessions, helped participants engage deeply with the challenges of disaster communication. By reflecting on their own experiences and discussing with peers, participants gained valuable insights into the complexities of interpreting in crisis situations.

Hands-On Experience: Simulating Crisis Situations

The workshop's practical component, enriched by our partnership with SUAK, involved simulating disaster scenarios reminiscent of the recent earthquake in Turkey. Participants practiced interpreting in high-pressure environments, role-playing situations that demanded quick thinking and clear communication. This hands-on experience was crucial in preparing them for the realities of disaster response.

Raising Awareness and Building Competence

The collaboration with SUAK was instrumental in raising awareness about the vital role of interpreters in disaster situations. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical exercises, we aimed to build the competence and confidence of novice interpreters. The workshop provided a platform for participants to understand the specific challenges faced during emergencies and to develop the skills needed to address them effectively.

In conclusion, the earthquake in Turkey served as a powerful reminder of the importance of disaster and community interpreting. Our workshop, conducted with the support of SUAK, highlighted the necessity of specialized training for interpreters. By enhancing skills and raising awareness, we can better prepare for future crises, ensuring that communication remains effective and that language barriers do not impede disaster response efforts.

Reflecting on the collaboration with SUAK, it is clear that partnerships like these are vital in advancing the field of disaster interpreting. Together, we can ensure that interpreters are equipped to handle the challenges of crisis situations and provide crucial support in times of need.
